Driving posts is a better long-term option because it helps your fence stay straighter with less maintenance. Instead of digging a big hole and refilling it around a concrete collar, a driven post is installed into undisturbed soil that gets packed tightly around the post. That tight fit reduces shifting and loosening over time, which means fewer “why is my fence leaning?” headaches down the road.

It also performs better in freeze-and-thaw conditions. Concrete and disturbed backfill can trap water around the post area, and when that moisture freezes it can push and lift—one of the common causes of frost heave and post movement. With driven posts, there’s no concrete collar to hold water in place, and drainage around the post is more natural, so there’s less opportunity for freeze/thaw forces to work the post out of alignment.

Finally, driven posts can typically be installed deeper—often around 3 to 4 feet—compared to many wood posts set in concrete that end up around 30 inches deep at most.
